From South Tyrol to Nurmes: Reflections on My Exchange Experience
My name is Sofia and I was able to participate in a one month-long exchange in Nurmes, Finland, which allowed me to immerse myself in Finnish culture and improve my language skills. Growing up in a bilingual household, where both German and Finnish are used, I was very exited about this exchange in Finland, because I’d be able to use Finnish in a formal setting.
When I arrived in Finland, I was nervous about my language skills and fitting into a new environment. However, the small school in Nurmes and the welcoming students made me feel at ease. The relaxed curriculum allowed me to participate fully in the Finnish lessons. During the exam week of my classmates I had the opportunity to visit the local elementary and middle school, where I gave presentations in over 15 classes.
Living with my host family on a farm was a unique experience, offering a peaceful setting that reminded me of my grandparents’ farm in Finland. Although I initially struggled with my Finnish, I gradually became more confident in speaking the language and communicating with my host family and classmates.
Overall, this exchange gave me a deeper understanding of the Finnish culture and school life. I learned a lot about the Finnish education system, especially how technology is integrated into learning. I am grateful for the opportunity and the meaningful experiences I gained during my time in Nurmes.
